Day Discover North Vietnam Tour

Day 1: Australia  – Hanoi (In-flight Meals) 

Depart Australia today on your Vietnam, China Southern, Malaysian Airlines (or other, subject to availability) full service flight to Hanoi, Vietnam.

Upon arrival, a tour representative and driver will meet you at the airport for your transfer to the hotel. Note: Due to flight times and scheduling, some customers may be required to depart on the day before (day 0). Enjoy the rest of the day at leisure in Hanoi!

Day 2:

Hanoi Sapa & Cat Cat Village (B, L, D) 

After an early breakfast, your coach will depart from the hotel and travel to Sapa (approx. 4-hours). On arrival into Sapa, be met by your guide and escorted to the hotel for check-in and lunch. Then, set off on a short trek to the gate of Cat Cat Village; home of the Black H’mong people and located in a deep valley at the foot of Fansipan Peak. Your local guide will point out unique daily activities of the locals. Trek down to the valley bottom and waterfall, view the French-built Hydraulic Power Station and take advantage of some photo stops before the walk back up to the bus.

Total walking time approx. 3-hours over 5 to 6-kilometres, walking difficulty 4/10, some moderate gradients.

Return to Sapa in the late afternoon to have dinner at the restaurant.

Day 3:

Linh Ho – Lao Chai – Ta Van – Hanoi (B, L, D) 

Have breakfast at the hotel and prepare a light bag for today’s walk. Trek at an easy pace from Sapa to Y Linh Ho, then walk through rice terraces and along Muong Hoa Stream to the Black Hmong Village of Lao Chai. Enjoy the spectacular landscape of Hoang Lien Son Mountain.

After 2 to 3-hours of comfortable walking, rest and have a picnic lunch at Lao Chai Village, before heading on to Ta Van village – home of the Dzay people. The bus will pick you up mid-afternoon and transfer you to the bus to return to Hanoi for the evening.

Total walking time approx. 3-hours over 5 to 6-kilometres, walking difficulty 4/10, some moderate gradients.

Day 4:

Hanoi – Halong Bay (approx. 175-kilometres) (B, L, D) 

After breakfast this morning, depart for Halong Bay. Cross the fertile Red River delta to reach the coast just before noon. Embark on an overnight cruise in the legendary seascape of Halong Bay. On board, enjoy delicious seafood-based buffet lunch, with the iconic limestone rocks as your background. In the afternoon the boat will visit Sung Sot Cave and Titov Island for time to relax and soak up the scenery. The program can vary based on time of the year and weather. End the day out on the deck for sunset before dinner.

Overnight: Onboard in a comfortable private cabin with attached bathroom.

Day 5:

Halong Bay – Hanoi (approx. 170-kilometres) (B, L) 

At dawn, an early Tai Chi session is available on deck, before breakfast is served. There is a chance to kayak in the calm waters of Drum Cave before checking out. The boat then cruises through Halong Bay, passing the traditional Ba Hang fishing village, the serene Dog Islet and other scenic areas. Experience a simple cooking demonstration before enjoying your lunch, then disembarking for your transfer back to Hanoi.

Day 6:

Hanoi (B) 

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast and free time to explore Hanoi today. The compact Old City is easy to explore on your own, with lovely winding lanes, bustling traditional and modern restaurants and great shopping. Or, choose to take an optional tour:

Hanoi City Tour (approx. 6-hours): After pick-up at approx. 8.30am, enjoy a guided city tour, visiting many famous local landmarks including One Pillar Pagoda, Temple of Literature, Ho Chi Minh’s childhood stilt home, West and Hoan Kiem Lakes. Enjoy lunch in Hanoi’s Old Quarter, included in your tour.

OR choose:

Hanoi City Vintage Motorcycle Culture and Food Tour (4-hours): At 8.00am or 12.30pm at the hotel, meet your experienced local driver for a safety briefing, then set off on the back of your vintage MINSK motorcycle. Ride into the heart of the city visiting local markets and little-known side streets. Drive alongside Ho Chi Minh’s iconic sights, including 1000 year-old Buddhist temples of Tran Quoc, the enchanting French Quarter, bustling Old Quarter, romantic lakes of Hoan Kiem and Hanoi Opera House. Then, experience a change of pace by travelling through rural villages on the outskirts of the city, before concluding with a food tour of several local restaurants serving fantastic traditional and authentic regional specialities (one pillion passenger per motorcycle).

Evening Street Food Walking Tour (approx. 3-hours and 4-kilometres walking): From 6.00pm, experience a guided walk through the intriguing Old Quarter which is still sectioned by the traditional guilds (trades) and is home to an abundance of street food outlets. Your local guide will reveal hidden restaurants and stalls boasting delicious local and national dishes. Vegetarian and other options can be accommodated.

Day 7:

Hanoi  – Australia (B, In-flight Meals) 

Conclude your Northern Vietnam experience with a transfer to the airport.

POST-TOUR EXTENSION 1: 5 Day Hoi An Extension

Day 7: Hanoi – Danang (B) 

After breakfast, check out and be transferred to the airport for your short flight to Danang. On arrival be met and transferred to Hoi An (approx 30kms). Along the way stop at Marble Mountain to explore on your own for about an hour. The mountain, also known as Son Tra, is home to a beautiful marble statue of the Lady Buddha visible from anywhere on the Da Nang beach front. Here enjoy the serenity and beautiful panoramic view of the Da Nang coastline.

After that, you will be transferred to Hoi An, check in hotel and stay at your leisure.

Day 8 Hoi An (B) 

Enjoy a full day of free time to wander the markets, streets and winding lanes of Hoi An. The town is deservedly famous for its excellent art, clothing and uniquely Vietnamese artefacts. Hoi An also has a thriving café and restaurant scene to sample from, or choose the optional evening dinner cruise below:

Optional Candlelit Dinner Cruise: At 4.30pm be collected from the Chic Hotel in a vintage army jeep and drive to Thu Bon river dock to board the cruise. The river is a hive of activity as the sun sets, the Thu Bon river is a highway of everyday life.

17:30 After relaxing with a glass of wine, observing all the river has to offer, your 6 course ‘an com gia dinh’ – family meal – will be served as the river and surrounding countryside is bathed in orange by the sun setting beyond the distant mountains.

18:30 Ahead of you is the UNESCO town of Hoi An. Hundreds of colored lanterns hanging from centuries old buildings, a kaleidoscope of colours reflecting off the river as the candles float downstream to greet you and lead you into the heart of the old town, where you can linger or take the jeep back to your hotel.

Day 9: Hoi An (B) 

Take a leisurely breakfast at the hotel this morning before taking advantage of more free time to explore Hoi An and surrounds. Admire the centuries old ornate Chinese architecture while you wander the alleys and river front. Alternatively, choose the following optional Bicycle and Cooking Class (also available on Day 8). You may also choose to take the Optional Candlelit Dinner cruise tonight.

Optional Morning Bicycle & Cooking Class (available Day 8 or Day 9):

After breakfast at your hotel, meet your chef and guide for the day at 8.30. Ride your bicycle with the group to the nearby Hoi An market. Choose your fresh ingredients and ride on to Tra Que village (approx 15 minutes cycle).  You will be welcomed with a drink before a short walk around the vegetable garden to see local farmers at work. Experience a foot massage for 10-15 minutes.

Learn how to cook local delicacies including Banh xeo (delicious pancakes), tam huu and Tra Que fresh spring rolls. After class, enjoy the freshly prepared food before pedaling back to the hotel, arriving about 1.30pm

(NB: Guests wishing to participate in the cooking class but unable to cycle can take a taxi directly to the cooking class in Tra Que. This will by-pass the market shopping experience and no discount is available for those taking a taxi.)

Day 10: My Son Sanctuary (B, Light Lunch) 

After breakfast this morning, your bus and tour guide will collect you for the scenic drive (approx. 48kms) to My Son Sanctuary, home to Hindu ruins – some built in the 4th century.  Spend the next few hours exploring the complex, comprised of over 70 structures representing several eras and architectural disciplines.

At midday, join a boat trip up the Thu Bon river, enjoy a light lunch on board and enjoy the outstanding vistas from the water. Stop briefly at a riverside carpentry village to observe their traditional methods.

After returning to the boat dock, be transferred back to Hoi An for the evening at leisure.

Day 11: Danang – Australia (B, In-flight Meals) 

Conclude your Northern Vietnam & Hoi An experience with a transfer to the airport for your flight home.

Note that some flights may arrive in Australia on Day 10.

POST-TOUR EXTENSION 2: 6 Day Hoi An & Ho Chi Minh Extension

Day 7: Hanoi –  – Danang (B) 

After breakfast, check out and be transferred to the airport for your short flight to Danang. On arrival be met and transferred to your Hoi An hotel, (approx 30kms). Enjoy free time to explore Hoi An for the rest of the day.

Day 8: My Son Sanctuary (B, Light Lunch) 

After breakfast this morning, your bus and tour guide will collect you for the scenic drive (approx. 48kms) to My Son Sanctuary, home to Hindu ruins – some built in the 4th century.  Spend the next few hours exploring the complex, comprised of over 70 structures representing several eras and architectural disciplines.

At midday, join a boat trip up the Thu Bon river, enjoy a light lunch on board and enjoy the outstanding vistas from the water. Stop briefly at a riverside carpentry village to observe their traditional methods.

After returning to the boat dock, be transferred back to Hoi An for the evening at leisure.

Day 9: Hoi An – Danang  – –  Ho Chi Minh 

Have breakfast at the hotel and take advantage of free time to say a last farewell to Hoi An. Check out is at 12 noon, relax until your driver collects you for your transfer to the airport.

On arrival into Ho Chi Minh, be met and transferred to your hotel. The rest of the day and evening is free for you to explore Ho Chi Minh.

Day 10: Ho Chi Minh and Cu Chi Tunnel tour ( B )  

* Please bring water and a snack with you as this day trip does not include lunch

After an early breakfast, meet your driver for the 60km drive to Cu Chi. Take in the peaceful rural scenery as you drive between rice paddies, look out for ducks and water buffalos swimming in the rivers alongside the road.

Cu Chi is now considered a heroic district for its role in the anti-American war in Vietnam, with its famous tunnel system extending over 220km. The tunnels served not only as an underground network for travel, but also contained the Viet Cong Headquarters, basic housing and even schools for the besieged local residents. After spending the morning learning about the area, your driver will transport you back to Ho Chi Minh City for an afternoon of free time to explore the vibrant city.

Day 11: Ho Chi Minh and Mekong Delta Tour (B, L)  

After an early breakfast, be collected and enjoy the scenic drive, bordered by green rice fields, to the Mekong Delta (70kms).

Once at My Tho, visit the lovely Vinh Trang pagoda, take a leisurely boat ride along the river and view stilt houses, fruit plantations and fishing villages on the banks.  Cruise to a quiet inlet for lunch in an orchard garden. Then take a boat through the natural canals to An Khanh, cruise on a hand-rowed sampan under the shadow of the water coconut trees, then enjoy seasonal fruit & honey tea to the sound of “Southern Vietnamese folk music”, performed by locals. Visit a family business which epitomizes the idyllic rural lifestyle, taste delicious coconut candy & observe pastoral life as you roam through the fruit plantation and village before being driven back to the city. Free time for the rest of the day.

Day 12: Ho Chi Minh – Australia (B, In-flight Meals) 

Check out this morning and be transferred to the airport for your flight home.

  • Exchanging some local currency (Vietnamese Dong) before leaving home is advisable. Both USD and the local currency can be used for optional programs, tipping, shopping and expenses of a personal nature.

  • A basic level of fitness is required for full days of brisk walking with intermittent breaks. This tour is not suitable for people requiring assistance or walking aid.


  • Hanoi and North Vietnam has a distinct winter and summer season. The cool but mostly dry winter lasts from November to April when temperatures average 17-22°C with the coldest months being January – March. Summer lasts from May to October when it is hot and humid and the region experiences its highest rainfall.
  • Hoi An & Danang in the centre of Vietnam have hot and dry weather from mid-January to late August, with temperatures often reaching the mid-30’s °C. During the winter months the rainfall increases with October and November achieving peak levels.
  • Ho Chi Minh: the climate of the south is split into two simple seasons, wet and dry. The dry season begins in November and ends in April/early May with late February to May being slightly hotter and more humid. The wet season lasts from May until early November with the months from June, July & August receiving the highest rainfall of the year. Throughout much of the wet season rainfall is generally heavy but short lasting, often occurring in a mid-afternoon heavy downpour.
  • The average temperatures in the south range between 25 – 35°C year round.
